I am reid smith and I am a humanist celebrant for funeral and memorial services.
I chose to become a celebrant because I think that how we experience the major events in life matters.
I want to help when life is challenging
I grew up and now live in South East London. I love my family our cats and a good dinner. I enjoy music, cooking and am keen if not very skilled gardener.
Before training with Humanists UK as a celebrant I worked for many years in the arts. I started out as a theatre maker, musician and community arts outreach worker. I still work as an Illustrator mostly working on magazine covers for the Historical Association.
I worked in major arts venues for the London Tate galleries, the British Film Institute. I still develop some engagement work for the Wellcome collection (where I am a facilitator for their “Conversations about Death” sessions). I’ve been a venue manager an events manager, facilitator, videographer, mural artist, team leader and trainer.
At the heart of everything I have done are people and stories.
My work is about people and their experiences.
As well asking what are you doing? we should ask how are you feeling?
Is this a safe place to be?
Are you confident about what you are doing?
Have you got space to express yourself? And are you heard?
What can be done to make your experience fulfilling and rewarding?

Thank you for telling our mum’s story so well.
Cath – South London
You really captured her spirit beautifully
